MemChem — Membrane, Chemical and Electrochemical Processes Group

Group Leader: Mónica Faria
Subgroups: SMEA, GEECS

MemChem is pioneering sustainable and medical innovations across four core research domains, and two Subgroups: SMEA - Smart Membranes Engineering and Applications Research Group, GEECS - Group on Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage.

MemChem is pioneering sustainable and medical innovations across four core research domains:

Polymeric Membranes: Crafting a Sustainable Future
MemChem specializes in designing, functionalizing, and characterizing polymeric membranes to masterfully control mass transport for diverse applications. We employ a range of characterization methods such as ATR-FTIR, SEM, TEM, XPS, and AFM to comprehensively analyze our creations. Our mission revolves around creating polymeric membranes with nanostructured materials, leading to breakthroughs in water conservation, environmental protection, chemical processes, food refinement, medical devices, and green biorefineries.

Revolutionizing Artificial Organ Treatments
We're at the forefront of transforming artificial organ treatments. Our innovative designs encompass bi-soft segment Polyurea/polyurethane and cellulose acetate monophasic hybrid membranes for blood oxygenators and hemodialyzers, respectively, mirroring the functions of natural kidneys and lungs. Through meticulous design and optimization of flow structures in membrane medical systems, including UF devices and centrifugal nanofiltration technology, we ensure peak performance.

Mastering Flow and Mass Transfer with Advanced Modeling
MemChem harnesses the power of Computer Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to simulate and refine flow and mass transfer in membrane modules, medical devices, and Micro Fluid Systems. We tackle mass transfer challenges in Ultrafiltration (UF), Nanofiltration (NF), and Reverse Osmosis (RO) plate-and-frame and spiral wound modules, with model validation using Micro-PIV ("Particle Image Velocimetry") and holographic interferometry.

Launching Next-Gen Membrane Hybrid Processes and Reactors
Our journey includes pioneering membrane hybrid processes and reactors to optimize industrial outcomes. We transform by-products from wastewaters of various industries, including cork (tannins), pulp and paper (lignosulfonates, hemicellulose, lignin), wine (polysaccharides, polyphenols), and cheese whey (proteins, oligosaccharides), into valuable compounds using membrane processes. Additionally, we're revolutionizing the wine industry with enhanced Electrodialysis for tartaric stabilization and harnessing membrane technology to fractionate and purify nature's bioactive treasures.

Promoting Eco-Innovations for a Greener Tomorrow
MemChem is committed to eco-friendly energy conversion and storage techniques with industrial significance. We are pioneering innovative materials for fuel cells and water electrolysis, driving forward a green energy future. Our work includes turning waste into energy by electrolyzing wastewaters, reducing environmental impact, cutting treatment costs, and focusing on green electrochemistry by purifying pollutants and mitigating CO2 emissions.

At MemChem, we're shaping a sustainable, innovative, and greener future for all.

Artificial Organs
Artificial Organs are associated to clinically well-established membrane-based treatments and assure, in extracorporeal blood circulation devices, the metabolic functions of a failing organ such as the hemodialyzer (HD)and the membrane blood oxygenator (MBO) for the substitution of the kidney and the lung, respectively. Technical and medical progress was achieved on 1)more hemocompatible membrane/blood interfaces  created by the synthesis of monophasic asymmetric  hybrid cellulose acetate/silica membranes for HDs and bi-soft segment polyurethane asymmetric membranes  for MBOs (Patent US9181384B2 – Process of synthesis asymmetric polyurethane based membranes with hemocompatibility characteristics and membranes obtained by said process ) and on 2)the enhancement of the flow management/mass transfer associated to the metabolic functions of the artificial kidney/lung  in custom-made benchmark devices with a membrane surface area of 60 cm2 as surrogate systems of the artificial kidney and artificial lung to  accomplish in blood compatible environment, stable and long-term blood purification and oxygenation, respectively.

Platinum/polypyrrole-carbon electrocatalysts for direct borohydride-peroxide fuel cells
Polypyrrole-carbon composites having different amounts of carbon decorated with platinum nanoparticles were prepared and investigated for borohydride oxidation reaction in alkaline medium and for hydrogen peroxide reduction reaction in acidic medium. A direct borohydride-peroxide fuel cell with Pt/PPy-C35% as anode electrocatalyst gave the highest peak power density of 1.4 kW gPt−1 at current density of 2.0 kA gPt−1 and cell voltage of 0.70 V.
