João Carlos Waerenborgh graduated in Chemical Engineering in Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) Universidade de Lisboa in 1979 and completed his PhD degree in Chemistry in IST in 1993. He was Principal Researcher in IST, Department of Nuclear Sciences and Engineering, from March 2012 until retirement in January 2023 and currently maintains a collaboration agreement with the institution. His main scientific area of research is Solid State Chemistry and Physics and his present research interests are magnetic properties and the electronic state of Fe in various materials, including multifunctional molecular materials, magnetic nanomaterials and intermetallics; Mössbauer spectroscopy of soils, oxides, sulphides, mineralogic characterization of natural samples. Until retirement he was responsible for the Mössbauer Spectroscopy Infrastructure of IST and elected member in the International Board on the Applications of the Mössbauer Effect (IBAME) where he was the Portuguese representative between 2017 and 2022.

Co-author of more than 280 research papers published in specialised refereed journals (more than 260 indexed in ISI Web of Knowledge and Scopus), 6 book chapters. More than 5900 citations. h-index=42 in Web of Science (all data bases) and in Scopus.
