Bruno J.C. Vieira is an Auxiliary Researcher at the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Engineering (DECN) and a Researcher at CeFEMA, Instituto Superior Técnico (ULisboa). With a highly interdisciplinary profile, his work bridges the gap between synthetic coordination chemistry and advanced solid-state physics, focusing on the design, synthesis, and magnetic characterization of multifunctional materials. His primary research interests include the Spin Crossover (SCO) phenomenon, magnetochemistry, crystal engineering, and the application of Mössbauer spectroscopy to complex problems in Materials Science, Earth Sciences, and Biomolecules.
Bruno Vieira graduated and obtained his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Instituto Superior Técnico, with a thesis entitled "Iron(III) Spin Crossover Systems: Towards Switchable Molecular Conductors." This work established his expertise in the synthesis of organic and coordination compounds—including air-sensitive materials—and their characterization via SQUID magnetometry, X-ray diffraction, and various spectroscopic techniques. Following his doctoral studies, he undertook specialized postdoctoral research in Mössbauer spectroscopy, a technique that has since become a cornerstone of his scientific career.
Since 2016, he has been responsible for the Mössbauer Spectroscopy Laboratory at IST—the only facility of its kind in Portugal—assuming the role of Laboratory Coordinator in 2023. In this capacity, he also serves as the Radiological Protection Officer, overseeing a facility internationally recognized for its precision in iron speciation. His unique expertise positions him as a vital resource for both national and international collaborations, allowing for the unveiling of key mechanisms that modulate spin transitions in advanced materials.
His scientific leadership was recognized by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) with the award of a competitive grant as Principal Investigator for a project dedicated to the study of innovative molecular systems.
With an h-index of 17, Bruno Vieira has authored over 55 papers in peer-reviewed journals, with more than half of these published within the last five years. His work is frequently featured in high-impact journals, including Nature Chemistry, Nature Communications, Chemical Science, and Chem. This trajectory reflects a commitment to excellence in the "Physical-Chemistry of the Solid State and f-Elements" domain, contributing significantly to the sustainability and expansion of chemical and material sciences at IST.
